Le monde imaginé par Hermann Hesse dans Le Jeu des perles de verre (Das Glasperlenspiel, 1943) situe la possibilité de synthétiser la totalité des formes de savoir dans un jeu auquel s’adonne un groupe d’intellectuels installé en Castalie, une province fictive d’Europe centrale, à l’écart du monde et de ses vicissitudes historiques et politiques. Prenant la Castalie comme une image équivoque du projet moderne, cette semaine de résidence aux Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers examinera la manière dont les nouvelles méthodes synthétiques en mathématiques (logique diagrammatique et théorie des catégories) ont radicalement transformé ce paysage et ouvert des possibilités pour naviguer entre des sites épistémiques hétérogènes les uns aux autres et de plus en plus spécialisés.

À travers une série d’événements publics et d’entretiens, cette semaine se déploiera comme une exploration de ces méthodes, de leur impact sur les sites naturels et culturels contemporains, et de leurs implications pour les pratiques artistiques.

Considering Castalia as an equivocal image of the modern project of knowledge synthesis, this week of residency at Les Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers will investigate how new synthetic methods in mathematics, such as diagrammatic logic and category theory, have radically transformed the space of reason and opened possibilities for navigating between heterogeneous and increasingly specialized epistemic sites.

Through a series of public events and interviews, this week will unfold as an exploration of these methods, their impact on contemporary natural and cultural sites, and their consequences for art practices.

Dans le cadre de sa résidence, Romana Schmalisch édite un journal gratuit, Notes sur les mouvements, pour rendre public, au fil de plusieurs numéros échelonnés sur un an, le développement du processus de recherche et de production de son projet, les pistes de réflexions et discussions engagées ainsi que le matériel collecté.


Notes sur les mouvements #1 (télécharger)
24 pages, français / anglais, avec la participation de Jean-Marc Piquemal et Tangui Perron. Septembre 2013.

Le premier numéro se propose d’analyser  les relations entre la danse et les mouvements ouvriers des années 1930 ainsi que la manière dont la pratique chorégraphique a pu être utilisée dans l’industrie afin d’en accroitre la rentabilité. Il questionnera la valeur d’une performance dans le travail et son équivalent en salaire, considérera différentes formes d’abstraction (notations et dessins) et méthodes d’entraînement.

Le deuxième numéro fait écho aux deux dernières performance, La Chorégraphie du travail #2 et #3, et s’intéresse plus particulièrement à l’éducation. Dans un entretien, la sociologue Anne Querrien évoque les normes sociales et le système scolaire. Dans son texte, Marina Vishmidt, auteure basée à Londres, revient sur un de ses essais qui analysait la relation entre danse contemporaine et dématérialisation du travail. En regard de la recherche menée par Romana Schmalisch sur la formation professionnelle et la performance, elle se demande ce qui a changé dans cette relation, alors que, dans notre situation de post-crise, l'emploi est de plus en plus facteur de violence latente.

During her residency at Les Laboratoires, Romana Schmalisch is editing a free publication, Notes sur les mouvements, that follows the development of the research process and production in different stages, and will present the initial thoughts, collected materials and discussions with various people during a period of one year.

The first issue analyses the conjunction of dance with Labour Movements of the 1930s (New Dance Group) as well as its use in the industry to enhance efficiency (Laban/Lawrence); it looks at the vague image that we have from various professions, researches the value of the performance of a work and its equivalence in the wage, and considers different forms of abstractions (notations and graphics) and training methods.

The second issue of the journal reflects on the last two performances La Chorégraphie du travail #2 and #3 with a special focus on educational question. In an interview, sociologist Anne Querrien discusses social norms and the school system. In her text, the London-based writer Marina Vishmidt revisits an earlier essay which considered the relationship between contemporary dance and the de-materialization of labour. With reference to Romana Schmalisch’s inquiry into skills training and performance, what changes about this relationship as all employment becomes more and more of a brutal hypothesis in our post-crisis conditions?

Frederik Stjernfelt est un philosophe Danois, actuellement professeur à l’Institut for Kunst og Kulturvidenskab à l’Université de Copenhague, au Danemark. Il est l’auteur de Natural Propositions. The Actuality of Peirce’s Doctrine of Dicisigns (2014), et de Diagrammatology. An Investigation on the Borderlines of Phenomenology, Ontology, and Semiotics (2007), livre tiré de sa thèse de doctorat portant sur la théorie du continuum de Peirce, et sur la pensée diagrammatique. La liste de ses publications comprend également The Democratic Contradictions of Multiculturalism (avec Jens Martin Eriksen, 2012), and Semiotics (avec Peer Bundgaard, 2010). En 2011, il a dirigé la publication d’un numéro spécial de la revue Semiotica, le journal de l’Association Internationale d’Études Sémiotiques, qui portait sur la Raison Diagrammatique et sur la philosophie Peircienne de la logique et des représentations. Andrée C. Ehresmann is "Professeur Emérite" at the Université de Picardie Jules Verne, Amiens, and Director of the international Journal Cahiers de Topologie et Géométrie Différentielle Catégoriques. Author or Editor of several books (e.g. Memory Evolutive Systems, 2007 and Integral Biomathics, 2012) she has published more than 100 papers on different mathematical or multidisciplinary domains. These include functional analysis with applications to control and optimization problems; category theory (sketches, higher order categories, with Charles Ehresmann); a theory of Memory Evolutive Systems, a model based on a 'dynamic' category theory, for living organisms, such as biological, social or cultural systems, with application to the emergence of higher cognitive processes (developed with Jean-Paul Vanbremeersch); and recently she initiated a study of anticipation and individual or collective creativity (with Mathias Béjean) . Olivia Lucca Fraser is an independent researcher living in Halifax, Nova Scotia, with her four youngest children. She is a participant in several geographically dispersed research networks including the New Centre for Research and Practice, the Jan van Eyck Association, the Form & Formalism Working Group, and a feminist collective writing under the shared pseudonym, 'Laboria Cuboniks'. Her research deals with mathematical logic, dialectics, feminist and accelerationist political theory, computation, and artificial intelligence. She writes theoretical essays, poems, and code.

Martin Holbraad is a UK-based anthropologist, Reader in Social Anthropology at University College of London (UCL). His main field research is in Cuba, where he focuses on Afro-Cuban religions and revolutionary politics. He is the author of Truth in Motion: The Recursive Anthropology of Cuban Divination (Chicago, 2012). He is also co-editor of Thinking Through Things: Theorising Artefacts Ethnographically (Routledge, 2007), and of a volume on the contemporary relevance of the anthropological study of cosmology, entitled Framing Cosmologies: The Anthropology of Worlds (Manchester, 2014). Holbraad has also conducted research with the UK-based theatre groups Frantic Assembly and Real Circumstance, exploring the practices of theatrical creativity and their ‘reality effects.’ At present, together with Morten Axel Pedersen, he is writing a book provisionally titled The Ontological Turn: An Anthropological Exposition. Due to appear in 2016 with Cambridge University Press, the book seeks to elucidate the recent emergence of the so-called ‘ontological turn’ as a distinctive anthropological orientation, articulating its core tenets and methodological implications, and exploring its influence in contemporary anthropological research. He also directs Making Selves, Making Revolutions: Comparative Anthropologies of Revolutionary Politics (CARP), a 5-year ERC-funded project launching the comparative study of revolutionary personhood as a new departure for anthropological research.

Franck Jedrzejewski is a mathematician and Doctor in philosophy and musicology. He has published over a dozen titles, including Ontology of Categories (Ontologie des Catégories, 2011), research in music theory (Mathematical Theory of Music, 2006, Looking at Numbers, 2013, with composer Tom Johnson), and in the history of sciences and mathematics (aleatory models and probabilistic physics). A second edition of his Dictionnaire des Musiques Microtonales (2004) was recently published (2014). His research is highly transdisciplinary (music, philosophy, mathematics, categories, atonality, russian avant-garde music). He currently teaches at Université de Paris-Sud and the INSTN (the National Institute for Nuclear Science and Technology).

Giuseppe Longo is Research Director at the CNRS (The National Center for Scientific Research, France) at the Centre Interdisciplinaire Cavaillès, (République des Savoirs, Collège de France et l’Ecole Normale Supérieure, Paris) and Adjunct Professor at the Department of Integrative Physiology and Pathobiology, Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston Tufts University, Boston. He is a former Professor of Mathematical Logic and, after that, of Computer Science at the University of Pisa. He spent three years in the USA (at Berkeley, the M.I.T., Carnegie Mellon) as a researcher and Visiting Professor, in addition to spending several months visiting Oxford and Utrecht. Longo worked in Mathematical Logic and on various applications of Mathematical Logic to Computer Science. He has been a member of the Academia Europea since 1992. Since 1991, Longo has been editor-in-chief of Mathematical Structures in Computer Science, a leading scientific journal of the Cambridge University Press and (co-)authored more than 100 papers. He is also the author, together with A. Asperti, of Categories, Types and Structures (1991). He recently extended his research interests and work to the Epistemology of Mathematics and Theoretical Biology. Together with F.Bailly, he published Mathematics and the natural sciences: The Physical Singularity of Life (2011), a book that proposes a novel approach to cross-foundational analyses in Mathematics, Physics and Biology. Its consequences for more specific theorization in Biology are developed in a joint book with M. Montévil, Perspectives on Organisms: Biological Time, Symmetries, and Singularities (2013). Et sait-on jamais dans une obscurité pareille s’adresse également à un seul spectateur à la fois, reposant cette fois-ci sur l’expérience d’un corps immobile plongé dans le noir, mis en mouvement par le toucher et l’espace sonore qui se déploie avec et autour de lui.
